London Contact Improvisation

For over 20 years London Contact Improvisation ran a weekly class and jam first at Moving East and then at Caxton House. It started with a small group of friends and grew into a community based around dancing CI. Click here to read more about it's evolution. LCI's team organised intensives, national jams, CI online, workshops with teachers from all over the globe and in partnership with Moving East and others. It became a hub for CI supported by the weekly newsletter & website which provided space for networking, information and dialogue.
The Pandemic abruptly halted the weekly classes and jams and there are no plans to resume weekly programming. LCI is entering a new phase of it's evolution.
Instead of the weekly events, we will focus on other programming, in partnership with dance organisations. This could include jams, masterclasses, labs, workshops, intensives and other events about Contact Improvisation.

We would like to thank the founders Robert Anderson, Jouke Kolff and Kate Hilder along with Paul Douglas and Moving East who started the project and to Sue & Dave at Caxton House. Thanks to the webmasters
Tulio Campreger and Colleen Bartley and all the flyer designers and photographers. Thanks to the people who donated to the gofundme campaign and who have financially supported the project.

Thank you to the team which grew & changed: Tim Clark, Jenny Moy (Moya), Lily Picts, Jussi Tolvi, Colleen Bartley, Kirsty Hannah, Valentina Bongiovanni, Mark Rietema, Jonathan Megaw, Sebastián Ruiz, Mira Hurtz, Siyan Zhang, Eva Rozas and the many many volunteers who have supported the events over the years. Thanks to people who supported the Ukraine fundraiser especially Adrianna Pegorer. (Please forgive us if we left out anyone, 20 years is a long time).

We extend gratitude to all the teachers and musicians, artists, the founders of CI, our teachers and to YOU, the dancers.
News about future events will be announced Here.

If you have any stories, images, or memories about dancing at an LCI event, please share them by email. We will create a space on the LCI webpage for memories and if you’d like it to be published there please indicate that your message. It will be fun to have a place to share stories and memories.

Messages from the co-organisers:

Thanks everyone for all the dances, all the support to keep the events running, and all the hanging out after the jams. See you at new venues and events for more dances. - Robert

It's been wonderful dancing with all of you, supporting the organisation and sharing the work, I've enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to the next chapter of LCI. See you on the dance floor! - Colleen

What is Contact Improvisation:
Contact Improvisation a dance practice that involves training reflexes, touch, disorientation and reorientation. It is an open-ended exploration of the kinaesthetic possibilities of bodies moving through contact. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative, it is a form open to all bodies and enquiring minds. It started in 1972 with a performance in NYC as a project of American Choreographer Steve Paxton and has evolved to a whole new way of moving.

In-Person Classes are led by experienced teachers and we rotate for a variety of styles and approaches.
Classes are open to all and on a drop-in basis. We try to make the work accessible and affordable.

There is always a mix of newcomers, professional dancers, long time LCI dancers and visitors from abroad.
As a international hub, London attracts many people from different walks of life and our jam reflects this.

Most weeks there is a musician who improvises during the jam, we often have the last Saturday of the month "music free" to allow for deep listening and use of the ambient sound in the space.

There is a core team and a team of helpers that support the running of the jams. See Team page for more details.

London Contact Improvisation (LCI) was formed in April 2001 by Robert Anderson, Kate Hilder and Joukje Kolff as an unincorporated association.  See the History page for the full story.  The current organising team includes Robert Anderson, Colleen Bartley and Tim Clark.

LCI has organised day workshops, longer intensives and weekend jams for 20 years until Covid-19 and is on a break to restructure and reorient to the new conditions.
