SAFETY AND INCLUSION

LCI  Safety Policy 2019
this is a working document, its constantly being revised.

Contact Improvisation is based on risk taking.
It is rare that injuries occur but it can happen.
Be aware and awake during your dancing and jamming.
If you aren’t sure of anything, ask.

Hygeine
Do not come to class or a jam with any infection or cold or skin conditions.
Keep feet clean and toenails clipped.
If you have any concern about lice or nits, please refrain from dancing until its clear they are gone.
Be aware of sweat and body odor.
Do not dance with any open wound or sores or contagious conditions.

Clothing
Bare skin can be dangerous on the floor and for skin burns.
It is advised to wear comfortable clothes without zippers or snaps that might scratch skin.
Be careful about sock on the floor and slipping.

Under the Influence
Do not dance under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Abuse
Abusive language or threatening behaviour is not tolerated.

Physical Safety
You should be able to fall and recover and catch your own weight at any moment.
It is not safe to grab or hold dancers and not give them a way to take care of their own safety. For example, grabbing both feet or pinning them in a way where they can't catch or roll independently.

Emotional
This space is not set up at a therapy space or to work out emotional problems. The primary activity is dancing. Emotions may come up during a dance or with someone, quite often its very healing to dance CI.  Please be aware of this and if you need support with this, ask a team member knowing we are not trained as therapists. There are people who do work in this field who may help or make a referral.

Sex and Sexuality
CI is a dance practice and sexual advances or behavior is not part of what is expected or invited at at jam. The focus is on improving skills and learning from each other in the dance form.
A Jam is not a social place to pick up people. If there is some interest in this area, then take it off the dance floor and into private space, off the premises.
We are sex positive, which include being clear where its safe to express this and where it is not.
The dancing space is not the place to explore this, nor is the lobby as its a public building, we share it with other groups.

Inclusivity
LCI aims to be inclusive and is working on how to facilitate this with the resources it has.
We try to make the activities affordable and available financially and never turn anyone away because of lack of funds.
Disability- people of all abilities are invited to dance. We have different levels of experience with this.
London is a diverse city in terms of sexual orientation, gender, race and religion.
We aim for our activities to feel inviting and inclusive. We do not intentionally discriminate.

Children
Children are allowed to be at a jam if they are supervised and do not cause a risk to themselves or to the other dancers. The jam is not a playground.
Children are welcomed to join in the dancing or rolling on the floor or to sit and draw or watch.
Class is on a case by case and up to the teacher. Please email us if this is something you want to do.

Conflict Resolution Procedure
We don't have a set policy or protocol yet, we work things out on a case by case basis.
